Business casual for men: comfortable, considered office outfits
Business casual for men means dressing neatly for work without automatically wearing a complete suit and tie. Think well-fitting trousers, a shirt and perhaps a blazer or fine-knit jumper. The most important question is not whether a garment appears on a list, but whether the combination suits your workplace, role and appointments. A considered foundation helps you look professional while feeling comfortable.
What does business casual mean at your workplace?
One employer may mean tailored trousers and a shirt; at another organisation, chinos and well-kept trainers are normal. Start with any clothing policy, your daily duties and your contact with clients. An internal working day may call for a different combination from your first presentation to a customer.
A practical approach is to build your clothing one step up from the most informal outfit genuinely accepted at work. Add a shirt instead of a T-shirt, for example, or wear a blazer with smart trousers. This does not mean dressing more formally than your colleagues every day. It simply encourages a deliberate choice rather than guesswork.
Business casual, smart casual and business formal
Business casual is specifically about a professional environment. Smart casual can also suit a restaurant, an exhibition or an informal celebration. The garments may overlap, but the reason for choosing them differs: at work they need to meet the expectations of your organisation and the people you encounter.
Business formal generally moves towards a complete suit and more formal finishing touches. Removing a tie does not automatically make a formal suit business casual, just as a blazer does not make sportswear appropriate for every office. For an interview or external appointment, ask about expectations if they are unclear.
Start with trousers, a shirt and shoes
Understated trousers provide a versatile base. Navy, mid-grey or a suitable earthy shade combines easily with several shirts. Within our men’s trousers, consider the cut, fabric and details rather than colour alone. A distinctly sporty waistband or numerous conspicuous pockets creates a different effect from a clean front and a neat drape.
A light blue or white shirt is a useful starting point, although fine stripes or subtle texture can work equally well. When choosing men’s shirts, look for a collar that sits neatly with the top button undone. The fabric should not pull across the buttons when you sit down. Shoes should suit the formality of the outfit and, above all, be well maintained.
Three office outfits with different priorities
For an ordinary working day
Combine navy trousers with a light shirt and a fine-knit jumper. The result stays neat without feeling heavy. Check that the jumper is not too tight over the shirt and that its hem does not constantly ride up. This is a useful combination when you spend time at a desk and occasionally enter a meeting room.
For a client meeting
Choose grey tailored trousers, a plain shirt and a separate blazer. The trousers and blazer need not share a fabric: a deliberate difference in colour or texture avoids the impression of accidentally combining parts of two suits. Compare our men’s blazers with trousers you already own, and consider bringing them when you try things on.
For a relaxed office
Well-kept chinos with a shirt and simple shoes may be enough if the workplace culture allows it. Keep the combination coherent rather than choosing very sporty trousers, a prominent print and distinctly casual shoes together. If you are uncertain, an understated shirt is an easier first choice than a large printed T-shirt.
Business casual without a tie: check the collar
An open collar feels relaxed but still deserves attention. Try the shirt with and without a blazer and check that the collar points sit neatly. Avoid letting the neckline fall unnaturally open, and check that the chest does not pull as you move. A visible undershirt can be intentional in a relaxed outfit, but will not suit every business setting.
Do not use an arbitrary accessory to disguise poor fit. A lovely belt or refined watch can finish an outfit, but a shirt that is too small remains too small. Examine the whole look in a mirror, not only the upper half visible during a video call.
Can you wear jeans or trainers?
It depends on the workplace. When men’s jeans are explicitly or visibly accepted, a plain dark wash often provides a calmer starting point than strong fading, rips or contrasting details. Pair them with a neat shirt or blazer rather than automatically adding every other casual element from your wardrobe.
The same judgement applies to trainers. Clean and understated is not the same as appropriate for every meeting. For a first formal client appointment, smart leather shoes often leave less room for doubt. If your job is physically active or has specific safety requirements, the practical rules of your role naturally take precedence over styling advice.
A small work wardrobe that genuinely combines
You could begin with two pairs of trousers, three shirts, one blazer and one fine-knit jumper. This is not a compulsory shopping list: check what you already own first. Place garments beside each other and build complete combinations, including shoes. Trousers that work with three existing tops are more versatile than a pair that only matches one particular shirt.
A useful colour plan has two base shades and one accent. Consider blue and grey with a soft green shirt, or sand and navy with a warm burgundy jumper. Repeat a shade quietly, without trying to make every detail identical. The aim is coherence, not a uniform that does not feel like you.
Fit, seasons and comfort throughout a long day
Try a work outfit sitting, standing and reaching your arms forward. The waistband should not pinch and the shirt needs room for movement. With a blazer, pay particular attention to the shoulders and any tension around the fastening. Altering sleeves or trouser length may be possible, but alterations cannot resolve every fundamentally unsuitable cut.
Use layers to manage changes in temperature between outdoors, transport and the office. A light shirt with a separate blazer is easier to adapt than one very warm garment. The composition and care instructions of the individual product matter more than a general promise that a material will always be cool, crease-free or suitable for every situation.
A final check before you leave
Check the collar, cuffs, shoes and any marks. Make sure you can sit comfortably and that no distracting fold pulls across a button. Prepare important outfits ahead of time so that, on the morning of a presentation, you do not discover that your chosen trousers still need cleaning.

At Artson Fashion in Haacht, attention to fit is part of a family history beginning in 1937 and an in-house workshop offering skilled alterations. Discuss what is possible for your garment beforehand. You are choosing clothing for your body, working day and style, rather than dressing for an abstract label.
